Matthews North Carolina is a growing and vibrant community located on the outskirts of Charlotte with its own distinct character. The town was first incorporated back in 1879 – it only had a couple of hundred residents then, but it’s now home to more than 27,000.

Everyone likes to think their town has character. It’s true in Matthews’ case. The town has worked hard to maintain its original charm – even going as far as to move the train depot first built in the 1880’s to the downtown core. It’s been fully restored and now acts as the town’s visitor center and chamber of commerce.

Right next to the visitor’s center is a restored red caboose that is well worth a visit. It’s like taking a step back in time when you climb aboard.

Matthews also has a thriving art community centered around the McDowell Arts Center. It’s free to visit and it’s open year round. The Matthews Heritage museum is another great place to visit and look back into the towns past.

Downtown also has a vintage hardware store mixed in among modern restaurants and stores of all kinds. There’s always interesting places to visit downtown. An evening of entertainment at the Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts is a great way to end the day after a busy day of shopping.

If you prefer the fresh air, Four Mile Creek Greenway is an opportunity to stretch your legs. Squirrel Lake Park is a nice place for a family picnic as well. There’s a lot to do in Matthews.
